Thomas Fleming was the first African American male in the Coro Fellows Program inaugural class of 1947. He was born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1907. Through his 61 year career as an editor, columnist, and reporter for the San Francisco Bay Area Black Press, Thomas covered nine political conventions and met with many prominent Civil Rights leaders like: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Langston Hughes, and Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall.
Fleming received a number of awards and honors throughout his career including: Career Achievement Award for Print from the Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalist and being named the “oldest-longest running continuously active journalist” from the California State Assembly.
